🚨 UPDATE: Australia’s Housing & Homelessness Crisis Is Getting Worse

Thank you again to everyone supporting this petition. The more research we uncover, the clearer it becomes that Australia is facing a serious housing emergency.

📈💵 Rising Rent and Housing Speculation Are Hurting Australian Families

Australia’s housing crisis is getting worse as rent prices continue to rise beyond what many people can afford. More families, workers, students, pensioners, and vulnerable Australians are being pushed into housing stress and homelessness while housing is increasingly treated as a tool for speculation and profit. Too many rental properties are being used to generate excessive income while ordinary people struggle just to keep a roof over their heads. Housing should provide safety, dignity, stability, and belonging — not fear, insecurity, or exploitation.

📈 Homelessness is rising rapidly:
• The Australian Bureau of Statistics reported homelessness increased from 45 people per 10,000 in 2006 to 48 per 10,000 in 2021.
• Around 280,000 Australians sought help from homelessness services in 2023–24 — and over 110,000 requests for help went unanswered.

Reports show an extra 10,000 Australians are becoming homeless every month, with homelessness increasing by 22% in just three years due to soaring rents and housing costs.

💔 Youth homelessness is also escalating:
• Mission Australia’s Youth Homelessness Report found nearly 1 in 10 young people experienced homelessness in the previous year.
• Many reported severe loneliness, mental health struggles, and housing insecurity.

🏠 Young Australians are being hit especially hard:
• 0% of rental listings surveyed across Australia were affordable for a young person living on Youth Allowance.
• Almost half of young people seeking homelessness support needed long-term housing, yet only 4.3% received it.
