Ban the breeding and selling of dogs bred to have negative health traits.
The Issue
Recently whilst looking for a dog for myself and my girlfriend, we have run into breeders who are selling dogs such as German Shephards which are clearly not healthy dogs, (as seen in the linked study from Biomed central) in the interest of making them look nice for owners. This comes in the form of them being bred to have a slopped back which is bad for their hip joint and leads to a life of pain, unfortunately this is something that the RVC have said will likely only stop when people stop buying these breeds, however I think it is highly likely many people who buy these deformed dogs, do not realise the health issues that come with this kind of breeding, and after the issue of crufts giving one of these essentially disabled dogs best in breed, it is clear some kind of definitive action should be taken, to ensure that in the future healthy breeding and the welfare of the dogs are put above people’s desire for a fancy looking dog.
