Whereas:

·      we are in the midst of a climate crisis and an economic crisis, with 400,000 manufacturing jobs losses in Canada since 2004, according to Stats Can

·      85% of tar sands need to remain in the ground to avert climate catastrophe, according to the scientific magazine Nature

·      the $1.3 billion in subsidies to the oil and gas industry could create 18,000 more climate jobs, according to a report by Blue-Green Canada

·      a $1.1 billion homes and buildings retrofit program could create a million person jobs years of employment, according to the Green Energy Network

·      the government could create 92,000 public sector jobs in wind, solar, tidal and geothermal energy with $4.65 billion (less than half what Harper gave to the military in the latest budget)

·      the government could create 100,000 jobs building a high-speed rail network that would cut carbon emissions and improve transportation, at a cost of $25 billion (less than half what Harper has given in corporate tax cuts)

Therefore:

We, the undersigned, urge Parliament to reverse corporate tax cuts and redirect tar sands subsidies and military spending to create a million climate jobs and help prevent a climate crisis
