With the election of a new government and the appointment of Alistair Carn as the Minister for Veterans and People, the Walter Tull Campaign is entering an exciting new phase. Recent developments, including the involvement of Northampton MP Lucy Rigby, have brought renewed attention and urgency to our mission.

As campaign founder, I recently followed up on Lucy Rigby’s impactful letter by personally reaching out to Minister Carn to make him aware of this campaign and its significance. For those unfamiliar, Alistair Carn brings with him an impressive background of service and leadership.

Minister Carn grew up in Scotland, attended a state school, and joined the military at just 19, working his way up to the rank of Colonel. Over his career, he demonstrated exceptional leadership, completing four tours in Afghanistan and receiving the Military Cross in 2011 for gallant and distinguished service.

Following his operational roles, Carn became a trusted adviser to three UK Defence Secretaries, and more recently, served as Chief of Staff to the Commander UK Strike Force, where he played a pivotal role in coordinating aircraft carriers and commando forces. His dedication was further recognised when he was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 2022.

In July 2024, Carn was elected as the Labour MP for Birmingham Selly Oak and assumed his ministerial role shortly after. As Minister for Veterans and People, his responsibilities include addressing the challenges faced by veterans and recognising the contributions of those who served.

This is why his engagement in the Walter Tull Campaign is so vital. Walter Tull’s legacy as a trailblazer, a footballer, and one of the first Black officers in the British Army is an enduring symbol of courage, equality, and service. It is more important than ever that we honour his memory and push for meaningful action to ensure his story is properly recognised.

This campaign is not only about justice for Walter Tull but also about inspiring and motivating future generations. His story is a powerful reminder of what can be achieved in the face of adversity and prejudice. By securing recognition for Tull’s contributions, we hope to provide a lasting legacy that encourages young people to strive for excellence, embrace diversity, and uphold the values of resilience and determination.

I look forward to updating you on the Minister’s response and the progress we continue to make in achieving justice and recognition for Walter Tull’s extraordinary legacy.
