Keep Canal Rocks Boat Ramp Open
This petition had 4,100 supporters
Canal Rocks Boat Ramp, near Yallingup, has provided boaters and fishers access to the capes region for over 50 years. It is one of the safest and most utilised ramps in the region and it is a vital launching point for local Volunteer Sea Rescue operations.
Despite the ramp being arguably one of the safest boat ramps in the area during most swell conditions, the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions is considering closing this ramp and has cited safety concerns as the reason for the potential closure.
This has been met with anger and frustration from both local and visiting fishers who are set to lose access to one of the South-West’s most loved aquatic playgrounds.
Closing this ramp will mean long time family actives associated with boating such as fishing, diving and whale watching will no longer be as readily available to the local community.
High quality fishing experiences are an integral part of the West Australian lifestyle and the opportunity to access these experiences must be protected.
While Recfishwest have a strong record in advocating for fishing safety we recognise that ultimately people must take personal responsibility.
It is not the Government’s role to protect the community from every conceivable risk, it is the Government’s role to maintain basic community infrastructure such as the Canal Rocks boat ramp.
We are calling on the Minister for Environment the Hon Steven Dawson MLC to ensure the Canal Rocks boat ramp remains open allowing families continued access the high quality recreation experiences that the South-West is famous for.
