This petition requests the attention of the Hon. President of Sri Lanka, the Hon. Prime Minister of Sri Lanka and the Executives of the Disaster Management Centre of Sri Lanka, to the situation that port officials in Colombo not releasing the flood relief donations sent to Sri Lanka by those Sri Lankans living in the UK and in some other countries. This bureaucratic blockage of the donations sent for those Sri Lankans affected by recent floods is not what the donors or the flood victims expect to see from the officials at Sri Lankan ports.
Sri Lankans living in the UK were sad to see the devastation caused by recent floods in Sri Lanka. As a response to this calamity, some sensitive Sri Lankans collected humanitarian aid in the form or food, clothing and medicines. These goods were sent to Sri Lanka at the earliest possible but very sadly, those donations are still held in Sri Lankan port warehouses, until a tax payment is made to release them. Those items are purely meant for humanitarian aid and not for sale and asking for taxes to be paid release such donations is sad and unexplainable. Keeping those items in warehouses, in conditions not meant for long term storage or food or medicine means these donations will go to waste without reaching those, who are in desperate need. It is sad that the port officials are demanding tax payements on donations at a time, when foreign donations can mean a lot to the Sri Lankan society. The donations were addressed to ‘Manusath Derana’, a charity program overseen by Derana TV. If the Sri Lankan officials still have any doubt that these donations will reach the black-market, at least these items should be released from the warehouses to the Disaster Management Centre, before the food items and medicines become unusable. It is a humanitarian crime to let donations going to waste, without reaching the flood victims.
Please arrange the flood victims of Sri Lanka to benefit from the donations sent to them by Sri Lankan brothers and sisters living abroad.
