The Accommodation Supplement for region 3 and 4 has not increased since 1964.

Rental prices in these areas have doubled, trebled, even quadrupled since the current rate was introduced, which means affordable accommodation has become out of reach unless food or power is sacrificed.

Current rates for area 3 & 4 are $65 and $45 respectively.

For example, a A Single tenant on the benefit pays $340 rent in Wellington is entitled to the maximum accommodation supplement of $100, but if the tenant moves to an area such as Fielding, and pays $340 p/w in rent, the maximum Accommodation supplement they can get is $45

We believe it is time the Government increased the Accommodation Supplement for these areas, bringing it in line with the increased cost of renting and Mortgage payments.
This will enable low income families and beneficiaries to afford to buy or rent a decent home, pay their power bills, and be able to eat as well.

Raising the supplement will also go a long way towards alleviating the poverty in these areas.
