We were asked by someone on Facebook “What exactly do you think could have been done that would have prevented any damages? At best, there would have been a little more warning or roads closed, but there's not much that could have been done to prevent the damage.”

We respectfully disagree. It’s been over 30 years since the BC Ministry of Transportation & Highways was sold off to contractors. Many people have never seen what incredible work was done by this Ministry, or have forgotten. These workers could be seen on our roads many times a day, in their orange & white vehicles, tending to every aspect of responsible infrastructure maintenance. Highways crews were often the first to arrive at accidents & emergencies as their communication system kept them immediately informed. Here are some things the skilled work force did as a matter of regular daily maintenance. Here is how we responded to the question.

“Rock scaling. Re-enforcement of bridge footings & banks with rip rap. Clearing of trees, branches, & debris from drains, catch basins, & culverts. Garbage pick-up. Removal of roadkill. Repair of Ministry fencing. Hydro seeding and planting of grasses on banks & burms. Regular clearing of drains in no post guard rail & dividers. Geotechnical surveys & monitoring. Water buildup monitoring on surfaces. Climate & weather pattern data collection & analysis. Regular maintenance & action on crack sealing. Integrated exchange of data & research with other (now non existent) parties. Advanced warning system. Just to mention a few.“

How often do you see contractors for Ministry of Transportation & Infrastructure on our roads today?
