I wrote recently to the Hon Johan Wessel Elferink MLA - Minister for Children and Families. (Northern Territory)
To inform him that
South Australia has concluded its adoption act review, and the Hon Susan Close MP - Minister for Education and Child Development will shortly announce the intention to update the SA Adoption Act 1988, Adoption Regulations 2004, to be inclusive of same sex couples.
In Victoria, a 2015 government commissioned review undertaken by Eamonn Moran QC, recommended changes to the Adoption Act 1884, (including amendments as of 1st July 2013) to allow adoption by same sex couples. The Hon Martin Foley MP, Minister for Equality announced on the 6th october 2015, the Adoption Amendment (Adoption by Same-Sex Couples) Bill 2015 to be introduced to Victorian Parliament.
In Queensland we have the recent announcement from the Hon Shannon Fentiman MP that the states 2009 Adoption Act will be open to review, including the consideration to remove the current exclusion of same sex couples from applying to adopt in the State.
This will bring these states in line with NSW, ACT, WA and Tasmania.
I asked the Northern Territory Minister to consider opening a review of the States Adoption Act - and to end State sponsored discrimination against LGBTIQ in relation to adoption practices.
His response is attached below.
