Final Justice for Cpl Justin Stark
The Issue

Hon. Peter MacKay
Hon. Julian Fantino
We the undersigned are petitioning and imploring the Honourable Ministers to intervene on what we believe to be the gross injustices that has been perpetrated on the family of Corporal Justin Matthew Stark (deceased).
Corporal Stark was a reserve soldier with the Argyle and Sutherland Highlanders of Canada and served a seven month tour of duty deployed in Afghanistan. Within a year of his return from Afghanistan Corporal Stark took his own life on October 29, 2011 at the John Weir Foote Armouries in Hamilton, Ontario. Since that tragic day Corporal Starks parents, Wayne and Denise have suffered greatly not only for the loss of their son, but at the hands of numerous investigations and boards of inquiry trying to get recognition that their son’s death was attributable to his military service. In the end they have been unsuccessful.
We do not profess to know the details of any investigations conducted by the military into Corporal Stark’s death, but it seems to us that any investigating body could not have determined one way or another that his death was or wasn’t attributable to his military service. The reasoning behind our thinking is that only Corporal Stark would have had any insight into the issues that led to his death and he did not communicate these prior to his death. The one defining factor that leads all of us to believe it was work related, is that he chose his work place as the location to terminate his life. Therefore we believe that the Canadian Armed Forces should have erred on the side of fairness, justice and compassion for this soldier’s family.
We are confident that the Honourable Minsters will also recall the recent headlines across Canada that Mrs. Denise Stark is also the Mother that received a cheque for one cent as Military release pay for her deceased son.
As your fellow Canadians we are asking you to use your influences to ensure that Corporal Starks parents be awarded the Memorial Cross (Silver Cross) for the loss of their son, which has to date been denied. Justin’s parents have repeatedly stated they are seeking no financial gain, but just the recognition and closure they justly deserve.
