Refugees: A person who has been forced to leave their country in order to escape war, persecution, or natural disaster.
Currently the applications for asylum seekers are supposed to be processed by the government in six months however this is not the case, in most cases they can last a lot longer. Whilst refugees move here to flourish they aren’t allowed to work or make a living. This means they can’t pay for rent or housing or any essential supplies causing them to suffer from a lot of mental and physical problems. In just one case a refugee received his permission to stay in this country after 16 years whilst getting married and have daughters in the process. This wait is too long. This has to change. People say that they take our jobs but that isn’t true considering they can’t work for the first year of being here. So who is truly in a difficult situation?
We are a group of 15 young people between ages of 15-17 working on our social action project trying to change and raise awareness of refugees both younger and older. In many ways we are very similar to young refugees; we have similar interests, similar aspirations however we live very different lives. We can only begin to comprehend the impact of having to leave a country we were born in and call home just to be safe; something that everyday we take for granted and may struggle to truly appreciate. However we strive to help improve the lives of many people who are not as lucky as us through this campaign.
We are asking for Sajid Javid to meet with young refugees from the Hummingbird Project to hear them out and understand the struggles they face everyday.
