Victory! This was a long battle with many, many people participating and working toward this historic day. YOU helped make this happen along with the thousands of voices around our nation that said enough was enough and now is the time to close the loophole that allows websites to knowingly profit from online sex trafficking. A few days after the bill was passed by Congress, Backpage was seized by the U.S. government. Here is an excerpt from Polaris Project’s statement: “The seizure of Backpage.com and its affiliated websites is a major victory and milestone in the fight against sex trafficking. Shutting down the largest online U.S. marketplace for sex trafficking will dramatically reduce the profitability of forcing people into the commercial sex trade, at least in the short term. Traffickers will have to rethink their business models and sex buyers will face greater risk. The flow of easy money will slow and, as a result, fewer vulnerable people will be bought and sold against their will. This action also makes clear that no one, not even a multi-million dollar media company, is above the law.
