The Issue

As a proud South African who has lived through decades of systemic corruption since the dawn of our democracy in 1994, I am deeply troubled by the lack of accountability among our politicians and public servants. We've watched as state funds — which should be used to uplift and support our communities — are squandered in acts of corruption, nepotism, and personal gain. This pervasive corruption not only undermines public trust but robs our nation of resources critical for development and progress.

Consider the impact on our nation: hospitals with insufficient supplies, schools with inadequate resources, and infrastructure projects that never see completion because allocated funds have been misused. Lives are impacted daily due to the ripple effect of corruption, and it is time for substantial change.

The Republic of South Africa must take a firm stance against these criminalities by enforcing stringent penalties. Therefore, we propose a minimum sentence of 15 years imprisonment for any misuse of R100,000 or more in state funds by any public official. Additionally, a sentence of 8 years should be imposed for corruption involving amounts as little as R50,000.

We are aware that enforcing such measures would not be easy, and we would need a robust mechanism to ensure transparency and fairness in the prosecution of offenders. Setting up an independent body dedicated to monitoring the activities of politicians and public servants, with the power to investigate and prosecute, is crucial. This body must be free from political influence to operate effectively and restore confidence in our governance systems.

By supporting this petition, you are standing up for integrity and justice, ensuring that those who exploit the system are held accountable. Let us collectively raise our voices to demand change and rebuild our nation’s integrity, securing a brighter future for generations to come.

Please sign this petition to urge our government to implement these necessary measures and reflect on the commitment to transparency, accountability, and justice that our country deserves.
