Dear friend,

Words matter: They have the power to stop climate change.

Watch investigative journalist, Emma Howard, explain how: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bg_-fQpNlOI.

Without information, we cannot know. Without knowledge, we cannot act. Without action, we cannot change the world.

In this episode of the School of Social Justice video podcast, I have a conversation with Emma Howard, an investigative journalist for Greenpeace Unearthed, Greenpeace UK’s award-winning journalism project. Her job is to reveal to us - the public - what happens behind closed doors.

Her journalism has won an Association of British Science Writers' Award, a British Journalism Award, and a Legal Reporting Award. Previously, she worked for The Guardian.

Emma details the stories she has uncovered, how she got a news article on the front page of the The New York Times, and why she believes journalism is the starting point for achieving social justice and protecting our protect.

Highlights:
- Storytelling has the power to inspire people to action, and hold power to account. Without it, the foundations for change are weakened.
- Powerful people and organisations will do what they can to sow doubt and fear in the minds of journalists, using dirty tactics to throw them off, to stop unfavourable stories being published.
- She tells a story about how she found some documents on the internet, wrote some words about them, told some people about it, and - in the end - how kids on the other side of the world read the story started to organise and protest.

We had this conversation in Newspeak House, a space in Shoreditch, East London, which nurtures communities that work to improve civil society in the United Kingdom.
