Hold Cornell University accountable for campus sexual assault
The Issue
For me, every matter concerning female wellbeing is deeply personal and significant. We deserve justice at all times, don't you think? This is why I am calling upon Cornell University to take immediate and decisive action to address the pervasive issue of sexual assault on its campus.
Cornell should ensure a safe and supportive environment for all its students, which can no longer be compromised. According to a 2021 report by the Association of American Universities, approximately 25% of undergraduate women reported experiencing sexual assault during their college years. This is an alarming rate that demands attention and action.
Cornell University, like many other institutions, has policies in place meant to protect students and support survivors. However, there have been numerous instances reported where these policies have fallen short, leaving victims without recourse and offenders without accountability.
To genuinely uphold the promise of safety and support, Cornell must:
1. **Enhance Reporting and Response Mechanisms**: Ensure that every reported case of sexual assault is thoroughly investigated. Implement clearer, more accessible reporting channels that encourage victims to come forward without fear of retribution or stigma.
2. **Increase Transparency and Accountability**: Regularly publish anonymized statistics about cases, outcomes, and the university’s response efforts to maintain accountability and build trust with the student community.
3. **Improve Support Services**: Allocate more resources to the Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) to better assist survivors in their recovery process. Provide continuous training for staff to handle cases with compassion, sensitivity, and confidentiality.
4. **Advance Preventative Education**: Mandate comprehensive, ongoing sexual assault prevention education for all students and faculty that goes beyond the initial orientation, fostering a culture of respect, understanding, and proactive intervention.
5. **Involve Student Voices**: Create a student advisory board to collaborate with the administration in shaping and evaluating sexual assault policies and prevention programs.
Accountability and transparency can transform the campus into a safer space. This requires the collective effort of students, faculty, and the administration. We have the power to effect change, but it begins with holding our institutions accountable.
Sign this petition to demand that Cornell University fulfills its responsibility to protect its students and cultivate an environment free from sexual violence. Together, we can ensure justice and safety for all.
