York Station Gateway costs double – residents demand answers
HOW much more are hardworking York residents expected to tolerate?
The York Station Gateway project had an approved budget of £26.49 million in 2021. By July 2026, its projected cost had risen to £60.104 million – an increase of over £33 million.
How can a publicly funded project more than double in cost without residents receiving a full explanation?
As organiser of the petition "Hold City of York Council Accountable for the £34 Million York Station Gateway Increase", which has attracted 1,753 signatures, I am extremely disappointed that I have received no formal response from City of York Council.
I specifically asked for a full, itemised breakdown of the additional costs, explaining where the money has been spent, why expenditure has increased and who authorised it.
Crucially, this information should be made publicly available so York residents can scrutinise how taxpayers' money is being spent.
Meanwhile, residents face rising council tax bills, deteriorating roads and increasing household costs.
Public money is not a blank cheque for City of York Council.
I support improvements to York railway station, but residents deserve transparency, accountability and value for money.
With 1,753 signatures supporting my petition, I again challenge the council to publish the figures and formally respond.
York deserves answers, not silence.
