York Station Gateway project:

* Original estimated cost: £26 million. 

* Current estimated total cost: approximately £60.1 million (reported July 2026). 

* Increase in cost: around £34.1 million above the original estimate (around 131% over the original budget). 

* Latest increase alone: an additional £5.4 million was added because of delays and unexpected works. 

* An Audit and Governance Committee report found the project had “significant weaknesses” in project management and contract management. 

* The audit stated the potential overspend was not reported for around two years through the council’s monthly project reporting. 

* The audit found the overspend required money to be diverted from other capital projects to complete the scheme. 

* £14.5 million was diverted from the York Outer Ring Road project to help fund the Station Gateway overspend
