Protect Children From Sexual Abuse in Buddhist Monasteries

Protect Children From Sexual Abuse in Buddhist Monasteries
The Issue
As a monk who has been ordained in the Vajrayana tradition since 2000 and as someone who has seen the trauma caused by abuse firsthand as a foster kid and street kid during formative years, I was extremely concerned upon hearing Kalu Rinpoche’s account of brutal sexual assaults as a child at the hands of older monks in a Buddhist monastery, including gang rapes. There are numerous reports of the sexual abuse of children, many of whom are orphans, in monasteries from various lineages of Tibetan Buddhism which indicate that this problem is widespread. I know you both are committed to the welfare of sentient beings and I implore you to take action to prevent the abuse of children. As Buddhists, we take vows to embody compassion and wisdom and the rape of children is antithetical to these principles. In the West, the Catholic Church caused much harm through their failure to protect innocent children from sexual abuse and their silencing and punishing of victims and I don't want Buddhist leaders to make the same mistakes due to the taboos against criticizing teachers. People should not be punished for speaking about these issues. Victims should be believed, supported, and kept safe from those who harm them. Abuse by religious authority figures causes profound psychological, physical, and spiritual trauma. Please take concrete steps to address and solve this problem.
