We have learned more about the charges that Jason will face in court. After nine months of detention, Fars (a semi-official Iranian news agency) recently alleged that my brother will face “security” charges, including espionage. You can read more about the latest developments here: http://www.washingtonpost.com/world/national-security/post-reporter-given-only-limited-access-to-lawyer-before-trial-in-iran/2015/04/14/aec72e08-e299-11e4-b510-962fcfabc310_story.html
The U.S. State Department responded: "If the reports are true, these charges are absurd, should be immediately dismissed and Jason should be immediately freed so that he can return to his family.” Washington Post Executive Editor Marty Baron also stated, "Any charges of that sort would be absurd, the product of fertile and twisted imaginations." My family agrees. We believe that Jason is innocent and that these claims are inaccurate.
And so do many others. President Obama, The Washington Post, Muhammad Ali, Noam Chomsky and groups such as Reporters Without Borders, the Committee to Protect Journalists, Amnesty International and nearly 400,000 people like you from 140 countries have called on Iran to release Jason immediately.
Jason may stand trial as soon as May, and he has very limited access to his lawyer at this time. Now, more than ever, I ask you to keep up our calls for Jason’s release.
Thank you,
Ali
