The Students Of The Bhawanipur Education Society CollegeKolkata, India
May 12, 2021

Dear Supporters,

We have an update for you all, We did get a reply from the Vice President of The Bhawanipur Education Society College over a Facebook post that triggered the teaching committee.

Once the post was shared on the unofficial Facebook page of the college, it attracted an audience of all kinds. On one hand, People supporting Students, and on the other hand, people supporting the college's decision to charge an absurd amount of fees giving unlikely reasons. (Response from the management has been stated below)

__________________________________________________________

Dear Students,
Please note that even if the College is closed educational activities are on and all our costs are intact.
Contrary to the popular notion that we are making huge savings in electricity cost. Please note , this is a false notion. We have High Tension load, and hence, we have to pay the full charges even if don't use electricity.
The wrong notion of lab not being used. The lab staff is being paid, the amc of lab equipment are being paid, the lab is being maintained regularly by paying maintenance cost, software renewal are being paid , chemicals expiring are being replaced. Please understand whether or not labs are used all costs are being incurred in full.
All our costs including- AMC, Salaries, Electricity, Maintenance, KMC Taxes, and all other charges continue to be incurred.
None of the cost has stopped or reduced due to covid.
In fact, due to covid, our cost has gone up, as we had to incur more cost for digital infrastructure, laptops to faculty, new computer systems in the classroom for online teaching, covid norm compliance, sanitazation costs, travel costs, virtual platform costs, etc.
Please look around, due to covid has your home electricity cost, telephone cost, food cost, government tax rates, medicine prices gone down ?
The answer is No.
In fact, a lot of the costs have gone up.
Please don't be under the wrong impression that due to covid the costs have gone down.
No, it has not, Not for us and not for you.
I understand your point on your family incomes going down, but how is the College responsible for that?
As explained, we have costs to meet, which have not gone down but instead gone up.
Every year the staff salary has to be increased and accordingly fees are increased.
However, this year to support our students, we have decided not to increase your fees.
Please note that there has been no fees hike, this false news is being spread by certain unscrupulous persons to create panic amongst the students.
As per annual practice the salary of our staff is going to increase w.e.f April 2021. However, we have decided to absorb the costs increase and not pass it on to the students.
We have already considered the issue and have not increased your fees despite the increase in our costs.
We have fixed costs to meet and, therefore, the best we could do, was not to increase fees and delay the collection of the fees, so that you all get time to pay the fees.
You will find that normally fees were collected in the first two weeks of the beginning of the semester.
However, since the onset of the covid crisis, to help the students this year, we delayed the collection of fees for the "odd semester."
No late fees were imposed.
The same was done for the "even semester," the classes started in early April, but the fees collections started from mid-May.
We have helped our students in our ways:
(a) by not increasing the fees
(b) not imposing late fees and
(c) allowing extended time to pay the fees
Till date during covid crises we have not stopped any one from online classes or examination for non payment of fees.
However we also have bills to pay. We cannot continue like this for long.
This is the best we could do, and we have done it for you all.
I have put all facts before you.
I request all of you to avoid endless debates on this issue.

The supporters can clearly understand that whatever has been conveyed by 'The Management' is not based on facts but speculations.

We students do not intent to disgrace any part of our college but as per the response from 'The Management, it's not in our hands now.

The Student body has come up with a counter that we will not pay any amount of fees until and unless 'The Management' comes up with a solution or takes our proposal for a reduction in this Absurd amount of Semester fees.

In addition to this, a teaching faculty had also mentioned that he can help to transfer students to another college (Ashutosh college to be exact) if students are not willing to pay the rostered fees. His exact words were "u can transfer urself to Ashutosh College ... we will help u." After few minutes the comments were deleted but to our good luck, we took all the screenshots for future reference. In a mail sent by the Teacher-in-charge, it is mentioned that' You knew the fees of the college before joining it. It was your choice.' -- But the Pandemic was not our choice, was it?

We can finally say that This Pandemic could not even induce Humanity in people. Empathizing is a far land.

As we student party, we have already mentioned before, We do not have a problem paying the fees, but an amount of Rs. 22395 is certainly too much given the situation we all are facing in this Pandemic. We urge 'The Management' to find us a middle ground that does not hurt the Financial and Mental status of any being.
