A row over attendance ‘shortage’ leads to overnight protest at MVJ College in Whitefield
Students of MVJ College of Engineering, Whitefield, undertook a flash day-and- night strike after the college released a list of 69 students, barring them from appearing in the upcoming semester exams. The reason cited was lack of attendance.
Students alleged the college did not give any intimation about their shortage of attendance. They also said the authorities refused to show them their master attendance sheets. Infuriated, they said they had no choice, but stage a protest on the college premises.
Interestingly, all the 69 students were from the aeronautical branch. Prabhakar (name changed), a student, said, “We have been interacting with the principal and teachers for more than two months and doing various project works. Our projects were applauded in many forums and at the end, we get this ‘prize’ from the college.
They have not given us attendance for doing college work and they have withheld out names from appearing for upcoming semester exams.”
Another student, Mukhil (name changed) said, “When the NBA team came for the admissions, the college has shown that we all have 85%. Now, they are saying, our attendance is low. They just had a board displayed saying all the 69 students cannot appear for the upcoming semester exams. This is unacceptable.”
Meanwhile, principal of the college, N Gunasekaran, told Mirror, “For NBA accreditation, attendance was not a criteria at all and students are just claiming all this.”
Another student alleged, “When we asked the college to show our master attendance sheet, the management refused, saying it has been lost. They have obviously changed the attendance book and they have tinkered with it.”
The principal said, “We agree students have worked for the college. But, that’s very less in numbers and we are abiding by the rules set by the VTU. We have requested parents of all students to visit the college. We will show them what has been happening.” Chairman of the institution, M J Balachander, said, “We can clearly see what has gone wrong in the master copy. We know what has happened and students are also aware of it. However, all are my children and I will take this to the VC of VTU and seek his approval to allow all the students appear for the exams.”
