Hezbollah Flags Off Our Streets!

An official campaign of the Jewish News and Zionist Federation:
In the UK, Section 13 of the Terrorism Act 2000 makes it a criminal offence to wear, carry or display any item that suggests you are a member or supporter of a proscribed organisation. This is understood to mean it is illegal to openly support terrorist organisations.
On Sunday 3rd of July 2016, however, the flags of Hezbollah were openly and proudly waved on the streets of London during the annual Al Quds Day rally. Nor was this is a one-off or unexpected occurrence. Al Quds Day is notorious for allowing public displays of support for the group. And yet no action was taken against those waving the distinctive yellow flag.
This is simply unacceptable. Hezbollah are an internationally recognised terrorist organisation. They are unashamedly antisemitic, reject Israel’s right to exist, and are linked to numerous war crimes and acts of violence against civilians.
The excuse for the lack of action is that only the military wing of Hezbollah is proscribed as a terrorist group in the UK.
Firstly, this fails to take into account that even Hezbollah itself rejects this false dichotomy between its political and military wings. As its foreign policy representative Ammar Moussawi stated in 2013:
“Everyone knows that Hezbollah’s political and military wings are one and the same.”
Secondly, it ignores the context in which the flags are used. They are not flown at Al Quds Day and similar events in support of Hezbollah’s political work. They are flown to show support for Hezbollah’s “resistance” – in other words, terrorism. It is direct incitement against both Jews in Israel and Jews here.
The timing of this petition is particularly poignant. This week saw the anniversary of the AMIA bombing in Buenos Aires on the 18th July 1994, which saw 85 people killed and hundreds injured. Hezbollah are widely regarded as responsible for this devastating terrorist atrocity, which remains the deadliest bombing in Argentina’s history. In the wake of multiple recent attacks in Europe linked to ISIS, it hypocritical and counter-productive that supporters of Hezbollah should still be allowed to champion this jihadi group in public.
Therefore we are calling for the British government to stop making excuses, and make it clear: support for Hezbollah is unacceptable on our streets, and will be treated as a criminal offence.
