Our special guest speaker, Teresa Roane, was born and raised in Richmond, VA, the capital of the Confederacy.
She earned her B.A. in history at Virginia Commonwealth University. She worked for eight years at the City of Richmond Public Library, followed by 15 years at the Valantine Museum Library.
Later, she became the Archivist at the former Museum of the Confederacy where she served for nearly 8 years. She has served on the boards of the Friends of the Richmond Public Library, Alliance to Conserve Old Richmond Neighborhoods and Historic Richmond Foundation.
Ms. Roane is widely know for historical, and historic preservation efforts. Some of her awards and recognition include: the Heritage Preservation Award from the National Sons of Confederate Veterans in 2012. She has also received the SCV Commander in Chief's Ladies Appreciation Medal. At their 2015 convention, the North Carolina Division of the United Daughters of the Confederacy bestowed upon Ms. Roane the coveted Jefferson Davis Historical Gold Medal.
She speaks frequently on a variety of topics including Minorities in the Confederate Military (which she presented at the SCV National Reunion), The History of the Confederate flags, Women in the Confederacy and the Davis Family's Relationship with People of Color. She is champion of the Black Confederate and takes on the nay-sayers by providing contemporaneous sources to dispute the myth that black southerners did not participate in the defense of their southern homes and families.
Ms. Roane and her husband, Eric, a member of the SCV, live in Richmond and they both serve as Monument Guards protecting the beautiful memorials on Monument Ave. including that of Gen. Robert E. Lee.Ms. Roane will include an update on the Monument Ave. situation.
