Please sign our petition to help us protect our tranquil coastal community from industrial activities. We are strongly opposed to the proposed rezoning which would allow a seafood processing plant and additional commercial marine harvesting sought in Hernando County Planning File # H1813.
Hernando Beach is a tranquil and unique community where 95% of the taxable value is in residential lots and homes. This rezoning would siphon tens of millions of dollars from the value of the residential tax base to enrich the applicant at the community’s expense. It will forever damage the full potential of Hernando Beach as the residential community it was designed to be.
Currently, virtually all of the commercial activities are concentrated on the northernmost main canal, isolated at the edge of town. Rezoning this parcel will open up the southernmost direct access residential canal on the main road in the center of town and set the stage for additional attempts to use the two other direct access canals for commercial traffic.
The rezoning sought in H1813 will further harm our unique residential community in the following ways:
- Brings the blight, vermin, odor, noise and light pollution, 24/7 activities and crime currently concentrated on Calienta Street to the center of town.
- Creates a traffic hazard with loaded forklifts crossing the only highway serving our community.
- Adds increased navigation hazards on a narrow, overstressed channel with a dangerous Z curve and cross current. This channel also serves as the ONLY Gulf access for the entire Middle Hernando Beach and Hernando Beach South residents
- Adds to water pollution dockside and in the Gulf and places an unsustainable strain on the marine environment utilized for recreational and commercial fishing.
We demand that OUR property rights be respected and our residential community protected from this destructive intrusion. Therefore, we the undersigned Strongly Oppose approval of H1813!!
