Designate the Vaughan Glen Hospital as a Heritage Site

The Issue

The former Vaughan Glen Hospital building, located at 9000 Bathurst Street, has a great cultural significance to our area.  The building is currently being neglected by the current landowner, and they wish to remove it in order to build a high-rise condominium.

Please show your support for the preservation of this heritage site by signing this petition.

IMPORTANT: You must specify your postal code in order for your signature to be counted by the city.  The city only recognizes signatures of residents, and they use the postal code as indication of residency.

The History of Vaughan Glen Hospital:

The building is a good example of a Georgian Revival style estate home built c. 1928, and one of the only remaining of its kind in the City of Vaughan. It has a long history of serving the most vulnerable members of society in Vaughan:

- Seniors - while it was known as the Villa (until about 1987)

- Young Adults with disabilities - while it was known as Vaughan Glen Hospital (until 1994) and

- Young Children - in its capacity as a private school of Children from a minority group.

In 1987 the government funded the purchase of the Villa Private Hospital by Bloorview Kids Rehab to be used as a 100 bed long term care facility for children. Vila Private Hospital was renamed the Vaughan Glen Hospital. This facility has a history of providing unique heath care services in this region until its purchase by the current owner in 1994.

Importance of Heritage in Our Community

Heritage conservation is a cultural activity not only does it remind us of our past and traditions, it acts as a point of pride and reference that helps foster awareness and confident cultural growth that respects the traditions and stories of the area. Heritage and Cultural Conservation in municipalities fosters community revitalization.

National Trust studies show that every dollar invested in heritage conservation leveraged nearly $27 of other reinvestment in the local economies. Heritage conservation encourages heritage tourism; Research shows that heritage tourists tend to include multiple destinations on their trips, spend 60% more and stay 60% longer than non-heritage tourists.
