The Old Porterstown National School in Dublin 15 opened its doors to receive students in 1854. The building has not welcomed students for many years now, with the building of the St Mochtas School and of late, Scoil Choilm in close proximity. As a long standing resident of Clonsilla I have seen how it has deteriorated over the years and is decaying before our eyes. This is a historic building and is truly an asset not only to the community of Clonsilla, but the community of Dublin 15, and beyond.
Ardgillan Castle is a country house in Balbriggan, containing a public park in the jurisdiction of Fingal County Council. Malahide Castle is also a popular amenity, which hosts concerts and large public events, again in the jurisdiction of Fingal County Council. We cannot compare the Old School House (as it is locally known as) to either Ardgillan or Malahide Castles, however the regeneration of both can be used as a template for the rebuilding and development of Old School House and its environs.
With its proximity to the Royal Canal, it can easily be incorporated into any future development of the Canal. Discussions have been held with a number of stakeholders over time regarding a potential Canal Regeneration project. Funding has recently been granted for the redevelopment of Shackleton Mills, again another historic building in the area.
