What a day of campaigning for Hem's Law really costs

Thank you for signing this petition and adding your voice to the call for Hem's Law. I wanted to share what a day of campaigning for this actually looks like, and be honest with you about what it takes to keep it going.

This week I set up a table at a community expo, banners up, flyers stacked, a bowl of chocolates to get people to stop and talk.

I told Hem's story, over and over, to strangers. Some listened politely and moved on. A few told me their own version of the same story - a parent, a partner, someone they loved who went through exactly what Mum did - and I was glad I had tissues handy as we were both brought to tears.

I won't pretend it isn't draining. Telling this story on repeat, all day, to people who often need to tell you theirs back, takes something out of you that doesn't refill by the end of the day.

But it's also one of the most energising things I do, knowing that this is how we move the campaign forward.  Every conversation is someone who now knows this law needs to exist. Every signature, every "how do I help," every person who says "I didn't know this was even legal to fix," is momentum I didn't have that morning.

This is one table, one event, one Sunday. Over the next several years, this needs to happen again and again, in every state and territory, at expos, community events, and anywhere else I can get a table and a banner. Each one costs money to attend, printing, travel to get there, and hours of my own time preparing before I've even said a word to anyone.

That's before I even get to the meetings with MPs themselves, or with the clinicians, lawyers and advocates whose backing helps convince a parliamentarian this is worth supporting. Each of those comes with its own travel, and its own hours.

I can't sustain that alone, not at the scale this campaign actually needs.
