Limericks urban estates have witnessed the growth of urban horse's invade not just regeneration estates nearly every place where green space exists. As our city expands long used green areas traditionally urban horse pastures now meet new housing estates. As these traditionally used pastures become smaller and less inoculious we citizen have awakened to the horse crisis in Limerick.

Limerick has a long history of having urban horse's but not on this scale. Years of regeneration left swades of land unused and their began the crux of the problem. Minor groups and others saw this land as a place to graze there horse. Left here breeding indiscriminate our equine population grew. Bring in then the trend for sulky racing and the kodous that went with it and it became a must-have accessory for our youngsters. 

Now instead of stepping in at this point and being proactive (Turning this trend into a positive) we impounded horse's. This strategy has been used to this very day.  We left horse's to minors incapable of taking care of themselves let alone this large animal. No education provided no foresight to the benefit of what use this animal could provide we wasted large  sums of tax payers money  on impounding even as year on year horse numbers increased. 

If we had stepped in then would we be here now. For over 15years our council has been bombarded with communities calling for an urban horse projects with no success. Look where that has gotten us.

At this juncture in time we know that an urban horse projects will not be the solution to our cities equine crisis but it can be a start.  Through education we can start to change the culture while engaging our youth to pursue a different path a career or a pastime to fullfill them.
