Immediate Action Needed!!!

Help get justice for a polar bear that was killed and left to rot last year in Kaktovik, Alaska. A sentencing hearing will be held on February 28, 2020.

In Alaska, there are two reasons you are allowed to kill a polar bear.

1. Self Defense.

2. Subsistence purposes (for Alaskan Natives only).

Please read and sign both our IMPACT STATEMENT and PETITION that will be given to the Judge presiding over the case. This is an opportunity for us to set the standard when it comes to protecting wildlife and ensuring that those that break the law are held accountable.

The defendant, an Alaskan Native, named Christopher L. Gordon, left butchered whale meat in his front yard for a significant period of time, which attracted a polar bear that he shot and killed. He left the polar bear's body in his front yard without using any portion of the polar bear and allowed it to become covered with snow, causing a snow removal vehicle to move the polar bear body and rip off one of its legs. The polar bear's remains were later taken to the dump and set on fire.

Since Christopher did not use any part of the polar bear, the killing is not considered subsistence hunting, and he, therefore, violated the Marine Mammal Protection Act.

If convicted, Gordon faces up to one year in prison and a $100,000 fine.
