I did some digging and found a 2011 Stuff article about 5 extra NZLAVS being sent to Afghanistan. The government airlifted them in Qantas freight 747s. They even spent $3.8 million upgrading their armour. They already had 3 vehicles there, so there was a total of 8 vehicles over in Afghanistan.
The reason this is relevant is that it demonstrates New Zealand is quite capable of airlifting these vehicles overseas when it wants to.
There are probably even better ways of doing an operation like this today. Australia has used its C-17A Globemaster aircraft for transports to Ukraine but the latest load of armoured vehicles and artillery were transported on an AN-124 Antonov Ukrainian transport aircraft. These aircraft are huge and can take huge payloads. https://australianaviation.com.au/2022/05/antonov-124-carries-bushmasters-to-ukraine/
I am sure the Ukrainian government would be quite happy for us to load up some of our armoured vehicles on a couple of these flights.
I am really not at all convinced by the argument I have heard from some politicians that it would be logistically difficult to transport equipment all the way from New Zealand to Ukraine, especially since we have already done exactly that when we transported body armour and helmets to Ukraine - these started in New Zealand and travelled all the way to Ukraine.
The goal I have set is to reach 1000 supporters and then ping parliament again.
