Petition updateHelp save Britain’s hedgehogs with ‘hedgehog highways’!T-Shirt offer ... and lots of news!

One day I will sit at my computer and find myself at a loss of things to write about hedgehogs ... but not yet!

First bit of news - my publishers, Graffeg, have printed 20 rather cute hedgehog t-shirts. In normal times I would have taken them to events and given away to enthusiasts. But this is not normal times ... so ... they are giving them to the first 20 of you who buy the hedgehog book from them - and it can only be people who have signed the petition as you need to use the code: HOGSHIRT (I am really sorry - the shirts were all given away in just 30 minutes - I had no idea the uptake was going to be so fast.)

Next - another developer has started to work with the British Hedgehog Preservation Society to help hedgehogs by installing highways - Harron Homes. What would be wonderful is if anyone sees a development of theirs appearing to drop them a line just to make sure that they will be helping hedgehogs. A little encouragement can go a long way.

Last week I was invited to be part of a webinar, organised by the wonderful Naturehood team of Earthwatch. Actually, less a webinar and more a 'Hedgehog Question Time'. One of my favourite comments that popped up (there were 280 participants who left nearly 1000 comments in the chat!) was how much better this was than the more traditional BBC Question Time! If you would like to see what went on - follow this link. Many thanks to the organisers, not an easy task, and to Kirsty Crawford from The Conservation Volunteers who had to put up with me maybe talking too much!

Last week also saw another hedgehog in the Christmas advert for a supermarket - this time it was from John Lewis and Waitrose ... the big disappointment was to find that Tesco have NOT incorporated a hedgehog in their advertising, thereby denying me the evidence that the hedgehog really has taken over the nation's psyche.

Though maybe last night's The One Show was all the evidence I needed - apart from a star turn from the amazing Dolly Parton - and Chris Packham and Megan McCubbin - there was a feature from the Oxfordshire village of Kirtlington, and an interview with my friend Chris Powles - looking at the amazing work they have done connecting up the gardens in an innovative manner. What they did not talk about was some of the other work that Chris does - and I ask you to PLEASE - follow the link to look at the work he does for elephant research and conservation (he is a multitalented superstar!)

And finally - maybe - the Hedgehog Highways Facebook group is now approaching 15,000 members. As the nights lengthen - oh, the shock of looking up and finding the light going by 4.30pm ... and the hedgehogs retreat into their hibernacula ... this means there are fewer opportunities to see with them. So what I will be doing on the FB group - along with other members - is putting up top tips for things we can do if we are lucky enough to have a garden. If you use Facebook, sign up and join in - it would be really good to hear what you think are the most important things we can do to help hedgehogs. When you leave notes under here, they swiftly get lost - the group allows greater chances to share and learn. My first top tip - is the same as last update!!! Leave the leaves as much as you can - make a heap and help a hedgehog.

Okay - not quite finally - this petition is so nearly at 1,000,000 - please share it - every extra signature helps. Thank you.
