Following delivery of a letter to Newry, Mourne and Down Council stating our intent to pursue a legal challenge against the Council's decision to grant planning approval to the JC Campbell development, Belfast City Council's Legal Services, acting on behalf of our Council, today provided a response. As expected, the Council have dismissed the concerns raised and stated the "proposed challenge is without merit and will be robustly defended". We will now continue with our preparations for the Judicial Review. It has been apparent for several months that the Council would not rescind their decision and that Judicial Review would be the only option available. Our aim is that this challenge will ultimately shine a light on the pitfalls of entrusting influential planning powers to ‘casual participants’ (with no accountability) rather than to the trained professionals whose very careers have been built on diligence and expertise.
