Kia ora,
A big thanks for signing the petition!
There's a special webinar on tonight about protecting Hector's dolphins and what you can do to help, at this critical time. We hope you can join us!
Join us virtually on Wednesday 20 April, 7:00 PM NZT for a special webinar on our precious national taonga: Hector's dolphins.
Link for Zoom meeting: https://otago.zoom.us/j/92286313032 Password: 340035
The webinar is facilitated by Christine Rose, Chair of Māui and Hector's Dolphin Defenders.
There are three other featured speakers: Gemma McGrath, Liz Slooten and Genevieve Robinson.
Gemma will be talking about how Hector's dolphins are made up as a species of small, and equally important hapū (local populations). She will give updates on the local dolphin hapū in Otago, Southland, and top of the South and why the latest consultation proposals lack in protecting these areas. The alarming number of recent dolphin deaths around the South Island will also be discussed.
Genevieve will talk briefly about threats to Hector's around Banks Peninsula, the lack of enforcement, and problems with protection boundaries. She will give updates on the Jetski Junkies permit application, the SailGP race, and the recent entanglement of a nursing mother in a cray pot line.
Professor Liz Slooten will explain what needs to be done to address the inadequacies of the latest proposed measures in the Threat Management Plan. They currently operate as business as usual for commercial set net and trawling. Solutions and recommendations that actually work for dolphin recovery will be given.
Christine will summarise with what the Labour government needs to do to safeguard the dolphins, and what specific things you can do to help them.
We will have plenty of question time. You are welcome to submit questions before the webinar on the event page, as well as during the Zoom/ Facebook live.
