Help Keep Pets Safe When Families Escape Abuse
The issue
Our school group has been tasked with creating a positive social change, and we know just where our efforts are needed. In New Zealand, family violence is a critical issue that affects many, but it’s not just the human victims who suffer. Pets, often considered part of the family, are at risk too.
Pets are frequently used as pawns in situations of family violence, often leading to their abuse, neglect, or even abandonment. This not only causes immense suffering to the animals but also compounds the trauma experienced by human victims who may delay or avoid leaving dangerous situations in fear of leaving their beloved pets behind.
According to the New Zealand Ministry of Justice, over half of New Zealand households include a pet, making this a widespread concern. Research also shows that in homes with domestic violence, pets are often the silent victims, as threats or actual harm to them is used as a form of manipulation and control by perpetrators.
To counter this harrowing situation, we propose the establishment of a national program dedicated to ensuring the safety of pets caught in domestic conflict. This program could include temporary foster care for pets, training for domestic violence workers to better understand animal welfare, and partnerships with veterinary services to provide emergency support.
By safeguarding pets, we not only reduce the emotional burden on victims but also remove a barrier that prevents them from seeking help. Ensuring that these innocent animals are protected could help break the cycle of abuse, providing both animals and their human families a path to safety and healing.
Join us in calling on the government of New Zealand to implement this vital program. Please sign our petition to protect the pets of family violence victims. Your support can make a significant difference in changing the lives of both human and animal survivors.
