The Oakland City budget passed and together we WON millions of dollars in NEW funding to make Oakland's streets safer for all-- thank you! You signing and sharing the petition helped drive the message home to the mayor and council that traffic deaths are preventable and the city must prioritize preventing them through making our roads safer and more accessible to all.

Oakland will be a safer place because of what you did to help move this campaign forward. Thank you-- all of our collective efforts added up and now the city will spend millions of dollars more on physical street infrastructure which will make it safer for everyone.

But our victory was not a full one. The petition called for the traffic violence prevention funds to come from existing public safety funds allocated to the Oakland Police Department, but the new city budget  substantially increased the OPD budget. We are urging OPD to use their authority to deploy traffic-control devices and do so specifically with the intent of creating safer streets along Oakland's acknowledged High-Injury Network.

Reimagining public safety to make Oakland safer for everyone is a large undertaking that will take years of continuous work to bring about. Traffic deaths are preventable and we will continue to work with the City Government, allies, and friends across the city to prevent them. The journey to a better, safer, more inclusive society is never complete but it's important to take a moment to celebrate each step of the journey as if it were the full path....and then take the next step.
