Today was the third day of Dr. Laila’s resumption of her full hunger strike.
She was joined at her daily stand outside 10 Downing Street by many friends and supporters - including Selma Dabbagh, Esther Manito, Juliet Stevenson, Max Porter, Andy Mcdonald MP, the Chief Executive of Amnesty UK Sacha Deshmukh, the Director of English PEN Director Dan Gorman and many more.
Last night, a letter was sent to the Prime Minister sent by 102 MPs and Lords, urging him to “deploy every tool” to free Alaa.
A few hours later, at the ceremony for the International Booker Prize, Chair of the Judges Max Porter expressed his solidarity with the journalists murdered in Gaza and to Alaa “imprisoned in Egypt precisely because he dared to write.”
Then today at PMQs, John McDonnell MP, one of the family’s staunchest supporters, appealed to Prime Minister Starmer to speak directly once again to President Sisi. The Prime Minister turned to him and replied “I’m not going to stop doing everything within my power to secure release.”
We’ll be back outside Downing Street tomorrow morning.
