Thank you so much for your support so far. Please continue to share this petition.
Freya is not forgotten and our campaign is still progressing. Recently members of BDMLR presented a scientific paper at a European conference to share a case study of how we protected Wally the Walrus. Importantly this paper aimed to make recommendations and offer clear guidance for ensuring the safety of future walrus visitors to our waters.
Our first 2023 walrus visitor Thor happily made his way back North following public engagement activity from multiple agencies including BDMLR, the Coastguard and more... and similarly to Wally he was spotted in Iceland on route to his home territory. Good luck Thor.
There have since been unconfirmed sightings of potentially another walrus off the far North of the UK but these are unconfirmed.
This said undoubtedly more will come as their habitat is challenged by climate change.
Even without them agreeing to a full investigation of Freya's case, we need to ensure the Norwegian Directorate of Fisheries commit to protocols (which we are happy of consult on)... which enable both public safety and safe harbour for these animals whilst they pass through our seas.
Please continue to support this campaign and we will keep you updated.
