Help AIMNNV Change Columbus Day to Indigenous People’s Day in Reno, NV
Why this petition matters

Christopher Columbus arrived in the Americas accidentally in 1492, beginning a long Genocidal and Oppressive future for Indigenous People in this Country. Beatings, whippings, rapes and murders were only some of the atrocities committed by this man and his followers. Columbus’s behavior along with merciless Government Legislation ( Such as the Indian Removal Act, Trail of Tears, etc ) has decimated the Indigenous population. It is almost unimaginable to think that at one point this land was completely inhabited by Native People’s, and today they are only about 2 percent of the U.S Population. To this day the Native population faces many struggles as a result of it’s eradication and painful history. Mass murder followed by desertion and starvation has left an everlasting impact. Alcoholism, drug use, depression and suicide take the lives of many every year pushing The Native American suicide rate higher then any other ethnicity in the general population. With this said I propose the idea of replacing Columbus Day with Indigenous People’s Day in the City of Reno. Let us Unite and join the 4 States and 57 U.S Cities that have already taken part in replacing Columbus Day with Indigenous People’s Day. The reemphasing of History and recognizing that to be very ethnocentric really Diminishes us all. #ForThePeople
