Marianne, Have just e-mailed all of the South East MEPs. I attach my email and would encourage anyone reading this to do the same (please feel free to cut and paste) Dear Daniel Hannan, Richard Ashworth, Catherine Bearder, Keith Taylor, Anneliese Dodds, Nigel Farage, Nirj Deva and Janice Atkinson, Given the number of unsolved disappearances of passengers falling or going overboard whilst on cruise ships and ferries I wonder why it is that CCTV and Thermal Imaging cameras are not already standard on ferries operating from all EU ports. Very close friends of mine lost their son in just such a way over a year ago, and they have no way of knowing how or what happened to their dear son (Richard Fearnside), in fact the only thing they are certain of is that he went over the side of the P&O ferry that he was travelling on. I would ask that you reflect upon how relatives of people lost in this way, never knowing exactly what happened, never being able to get any real closure, feel and ask you to put yourself in their position if it were a member of your family. The cost of installing such equipment is certainly not a factor as in terms of the overall operating and maintenance the amount is very small. Such equipment not only records that someone has gone overboard but it is also able to alert the ships crew that this has happened. This at least gives a chance of rescue and in the event that the person cannot be rescued at least shows the manner of the death and whether anyone else was involved. I would ask you therefor to press this issue with the appropriate authorities and help to avoid such tragedies in the future. Mr and Mrs Fearnside will never get their son back, but if his death serves to change procedures and make seagoing a safer process then he will not have died in vain. Thank you for your attention to this. Yours sincerely, Richard Ford
