Hedgehogs Are Disappearing. Will We Act?

We now have an important new opportunity to strengthen the case for greater legal protection.

People’s Trust for Endangered Species (PTES), working with the British Hedgehog Preservation Society and other partners, has received a £143,450 National Lottery Heritage Fund development grant for Hedgehogs in Focus: tracking trends for community conservation.

The project aims to develop a nationwide camera-trap monitoring network across England, using volunteers, technology and AI to build a much clearer picture of where hedgehogs are thriving — and where they are disappearing.

That evidence could be extremely important.

Our campaign is calling for hedgehogs to receive greater protection under Schedule 5 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. Robust, long-term evidence about population size, density and decline could strengthen the case when hedgehog protection is considered again.

This project does not change their legal status. But it could help provide some of the evidence needed to make the case for change much harder to dismiss.

The development grant could ultimately lead to a much larger programme worth more than £1.6 million.
