Hi everyone,
I’ve just objected to a proposed redevelopment of a local garden centre site — and it perfectly shows why hedgehogs need stronger legal protection.
The site has been described as “low biodiversity value”… but that ignores the bigger picture.
It’s part of a connected network of gardens, hedgerows and green corridors — exactly what hedgehogs rely on.
We know this because we record & share them nightly on our wildlife livestreams https://www.youtube.com/@VanlifeVolunteers This isn’t occasional use — it’s a functioning habitat network.
🚫 Yet the plans include no hedgehog highways
These simple 13cm gaps in fences are low-cost and widely recommended — but they’re still being missed.
This is how hedgehogs disappear. Not suddenly — but piece by piece, development by development.
That’s why we’re campaigning to give hedgehogs stronger legal protection.
