Save the Victorian front part of Berwick Infirmary

The Issue

It is fantastic news that at long last Berwick will be getting a new hospital, apparently though in the new design, the front part of the hospital is to be demolished and have flower beds replace it. All over the country where old hospitals have been re-modernised in most cases like the Royal Victoria Infirmary Newcastle, the victorian frontage have been worked into the design. Berwick Infirmary was opened in 1874,. In Queen Victoria's 60th year on the throne 1897 the hospital was extended. When King Edward VII was on the the throne the X-Ray chamber was completed, monies raised by public subscription for all of it. The hospital is part of our heritage, at the consultation at town council tonight it has been said it is a cost factor as to why it should be demolished. It has not been ever listed because no one would have ever thought the old part would be knocked down. It is a land mark in our landscape, it has stood and done the town proud and it is built to last, not like all the 'Modern', extensions behind it on the site they are falling apart. I'm sure with some thought it can be worked into the design. PLEASE sign this petition to save the front part of our hospital. Thank you. Haze Bettison
