Ensure School Uniform is Affordable for Everyone

Harton Academy announced last week the introduction of a new school uniform to commence Sept 2018. As a parent to twin girls about to start year eleven in September I initially contacted the school thinking there had been a mistake . I hadn't received any invite to a consultation. The school did not agree to reconsider . I started to talk to other parents and it became quite clear I was not the only parent not invited  to a consultation and many were complaining about the cost and location of supplier . I have spoken to parents who simply cant afford these prices. I have compared prices with a nearby school , who have recently changed to a similar uniform , and they have chosen a different supplier with significantly cheaper prices too. Harton Academy chose a sole supplier 12 miles away , that's 30 mins by car in little traffic , longer on public transport . They have also  sexually discriminated between girls and boys as the girls uniform will be significantly more expensive . Unlike other local schools in the area , they have also made it compulsory for those starting year eleven to also switch uniform. They state on their website there has been extensive consultation , this has not actually happened. There was no extensive consultation .

Although parents AND pupils want everyone to look smart and conform to uniform rules , we feel as though the deadline for introduction of the new uniform  (Sept 2018) is an unreasonable expectation and we require a longer phasing in period before the existing uniform becomes obselete . We ask that the governing body reconsider their decision to enforce the new uniform by Sept 2018 and allow a phased in period ( at least one full academic year, if not longer ) where both the old and new uniform are considered acceptable attire.

We also ask that the requirement to use a sole supplier for girls skirts and trousers is removed so that there is no longer an unlawful sexual discrimination between the cost of uniforms for girls and boys.

We also ask that the governor's revisit the letter issued to all schools in October 2015 , by the government , which advised strongly against the use of sole supliers and ensure there is a more affordable and more local choice for all parents .
