Reillustrate "William's Doll" for today's kids!

The Issue

"William's Doll" is a 1972 children's picture book by Charlotte Zolotow and illustrated by Newbery Medal-winning author and Caldecott Honor Book illustrator William Pène du Bois about a boy who wants a doll. This is one of the original picture books to tackle toxic masculinity.

The book sends a great message that could speak to boys today about gender roles, bullying, and acceptance, but the illustrations are not relevant or relatable to today's youth. The original book's illustrations include the main character, William, with a bowl haircut and wearing penny loafers, bell-bottoms, and neckerchiefs. What kid nowadays can relate to that?

We need Harper Collins to republish this book with new illustrations. Now, more than ever, we need a book that can teach the next generation that it's ok to be different. Let's stop toxic masculinity by getting this book back on the shelf with new illustrations for the children of the 21st century.
