URGENT: Tell our MSPs to vote for a moratorium Wednesday 14th September!
Hi folks, thank you so much to everyone who has supported the campaign. We are now at over 800 signatures on the online petition.
Action is needed immediately: Please email our MSPs to let them know that you support a moratorium on hyperscale AI data centres in Scotland. You can use writetothem.com to email all of them at once.
Let them know your concerns about these facilities being built without a national strategy. Hyperscale data centres place a massive strain on the electrical grid. The data centres in planning systems in Scotland would consume almost twice as much energy as Scotland's peak winter energy demand. To protect communities (and the people of Scotland as a whole) from the devastating effects of these proposals going forward without proper consideration, a moratorium is needed now.
Your MSPs work for you. Tell them you will not be caught in the cross-fire of the skyrocketing energy costs and environmental effects of data centres which have been rushed through the planning process. Finlay Carson MSP for Galloway and West Dumfries has said that the planning framework is not fit for purpose --in the case of hyperscale data centres especially-- he's correct. More information is needed on the impact that proposed data centres would have on communities, water and electricity resources, and the environment. A vote for a moratorium is a vote for a national strategy. A vote for a moratorium is a vote for Scotland's future.
The campaign against the Chapelcross AI data centre is gaining momentum, with a meeting taking place in Dumfries this past Saturday. A resident of Creca, the village which is directly next to the proposed site, has raised harrowing concerns. The village already deals with frequent blackouts and low water-pressure-- how much worse could these problems become with a 1,000MW data centre on their doorstep?
An Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) will be published later this month, and will hopefully provide much needed information on the potential impacts of the Chapelcross development. For now, a slide deck with information on hyperscale data centres, and specifically the Chapelcross proposal, has been compiled to bring awareness to potential effects of the development.
A public meeting will take place on Thursday the 24th of September from 7-8 pm at St. Andrew's Church Hall in Annan. All are welcome to attend and give their views on the Chapelcross data centre proposal.
