Halt Further Hotel Construction on Aruba to Preserve Natural Environment

Halt Further Hotel Construction on Aruba to Preserve Natural Environment
The Issue
Aruba, a celebrated island paradise, is under threat from unchecked tourism development, especially hotel and condominium buildings. Not only does tourism-related construction immensely contribute to environmental degradation, but it also leads to the alienation and discrimination of locals. Seashores, a shared resource integral to the culture and livelihood of native Arubans, are increasingly commodified and monopolized by these establishments. Locals and visitors alike share the love of swimming on weekends and witnessing the annual spectacle of turtles laying eggs on our beautiful beaches. However, the unbridled surge in hotel constructions poses a significant threat to these cherished experiences. Furthermore, a United Nations report denotes a direct correlation between biodiversity loss and tourism infrastructure development. In Aruba's context, given its small size and delicate ecosystem, this link becomes even more potent. Hence, we urge the government to enact and stringently enforce regulations to halt further hotel constructions preserving our shared cultural heritage and protecting the environment for future generations.
