Stop HRSB from displacing HACL's support programs for individuals with special needs!!!

For 50 years, Halifax Developmental Centre has operated out of Joseph Howe Elementary School. HDCEL is governed by Halifax Association for Community Living and delivers inclusive child care and individualized programming for children with special needs. On September 14th, 2017, the HACL Board received notice from HRSB that they have less than a week to vacate their office space to make way for a second pre-primary classroom.
The office space is where all support programs operate for children, youth, and adults with special needs. There are team meetings with early intervention service providers, advocacy, referrals, employability skills placements, and a parent support group. Forcing HACL to vacate this space means a disruption in service for many families who rely on these supports.
In exchange for the use of the space, This organization has invested over $150,000 into Joseph Howe Elementary School's infrastructure, including the installation of an accessible playground and wheelchair lifts.
HRSB's demand that HACL vacate after so many years, with no notice or time to find another location, is unfair and unreasonable. Please sign this petition to stand with HACL in advocating for our special needs community and stop HRSB from displacing the support system that is depended on by so many families.
We WILL give a voice to those who cannot speak for themselves, and our voices WILL be heard.
