2021, this is the last year of the Halifax public libraries' ambitious strategic plan which started in 2017. This strategic plan starts with the statement that "We work for the collective growth of our community, with people at the heart of all we do." - the inclusion of this book into circulation raises the question of which people?

The strategic plan has 5 priorities, one of them is to Encourage social and economic growth If HPL is looking to encourage social growth, what kind of social growth does the inclusion of an explicitly unscientific and anti-trans book into circulation offer during a time when those beliefs are informing regressive policy around the world?

moving on to their values, the document states "We're driven by achieving excellence in technology, diversity, service, and access." Defining diversity as "A mosaic of cultures and voices representative of Halifax and beyond. Safe and welcoming environments. Celebrating diversity through programs, materials, and education." I continue to ask how HPL is creating a safe and welcoming environment by including this book which is perpetuating hate-based ideas that are actively harming trans people in our current day?

The strategic plan finishes with their spirit, stating: "We will Reach Further, Push Boundaries and Be Brave to live our vision. We will go beyond what is expected, creating outstanding experiences for our community members at every touch point of our organization." Then I finish by asking for HPL to reach further, push this boundary, and be brave in standing against hate-based media in their circulation.

I'll be meeting with the head librarian and two managers today at 3:30, so expect an update on that.

Please continue to share and promote this campeign.
