Today I want to present the formal comment that was given through peer review on the research that is primarily cited in Shrier's book.
The fact is that academia has never been the greatest friend to trans people, when cisgender people write about us they are at best innocently ignorant to our lives. And of course, we are all ignorant of others experiences, we aren't born knowing everything. At worst academics are pushing an agenda disguised as a scholarly study. either way people like shrier can take imperfect studies like the one she used and present them to her audience as fact.
The comment attached to this study explains how the methodology could have been better and that research that studies the subject directly needs to be done to confirm the hypothesis.
You see, the biggest problem with this study is that the researcher didn't talk to the children experiencing gender dysphoria, the study only spoke with parents - parents who, if you remember in the jessie gender video, were all sourced from contentious websties.
This quote speaks to how the medical community has grown to address gender non-conformity:
"... it should be noted that not all children with gender variability grow to be transgender adults and that a transgender adult does not always grow from a childhood diagnosis. In the WPATH’ Standards of Care for the Health of Transsexual, Transgender, and Gender Nonconforming People, one of the roles of mental health professionals working with children and adolescents with gender dysphoria is to help families to have an accepting and nurturing response to the concerns of their children."
Abigail Shrier has chosen either to ignore this or not to read it in the first place. Either way her work is un-scientific and if easily accessed by the public will harm transgender youth.
I said yesterday that today was the international day of awareness of Missing and murdered indigenous women, girls, and two-spirit people. I was incorrect that is tomorrow. please stand in solidarity with first nations who are facing genocide.
