County Commissioners Meeting August 10th

The Halifax County Commissioners met on August 10th, 2020 in the historic Halifax County courthouse to discuss the ownership of the confederate marker of Confederate Brigadier General Junius Daniel that sits proudly in front of its doors. 

Since local historian and social studies teacher Rodney Pierce brought forth a proposal to remove the confederate marker at a county commissioner meeting, the Halifax County commissioners have instead delayed voting on a decision in order to confirm the ownership of the marker. 

At the most recent County Commissioner meeting, the commissioners decided to delay a vote yet again while they wait for the local Sons of Confederate Veterans chapter (SCV) to claim ownership of the marker. One commissioner, Linda Brewer, stated "The best scenario we could hope for would be to get [SCV] to take it and then it's not our responsibility."

In a follow-up letter by Rodney Pierce, he asks commissioners if the marker is not claimed, "Will there be a deadlocked 3-3 vote to stagnate the issue? Will you vote unanimously to remove and relocate? Will you not take any action at all in hopes that the issue will go away?"

"And if you vote against removal, or don't take any action, what about the Confederacy are you trying to protect?"
